Ourc Novices Prove To Be A Surprise Package

Aug. 29, 2014

OURC is proud of their tradition of not only being the greatest NZ University over the past 10+, but providing a robust structure to introduce University students to rowing, a program that has lead to Fiona Bourke representing NZ at the Elite Level.

Our next wave of athletes have put in the hard yards over the Dunedin winter, coached by Alex Gibb and Will Hyndman and have spent 2 weeks in Xi'an, China against the local university.

In the first race they shot out of the start at 44spm, settled to 38spm and held that through to the 800m, the heat really hit the girls, but managed to hold it above 32spm for the whole 2km.
Girls finished in 7:59, China was 49 seconds behind in 8:47

In the second race the OURC Novices raced over 1000m, and got the job done in a time of 3:54, well ahead of the Chinese crew who finished in 4:23. Technical difficulties meant the OURC crew raced with no cox box, but they were super happy with the rating, and pleased to come away unbeaten!

Well Done OURC!
